What to Look for, When House Hunting, if You Own a Dog

Buying a new home can be a challenge at the best of times, as there is so much to look out for. You need to check the suitability of the property, find out what the area is like, look into local amenities, and more. When you have a pet dog, you have to delve even deeper, as you need to ensure that the property is one that will provide a safe environment for your pet as well as for you and your family.

When you are on the hunt for a house as a dog owner, there are a number of things that you should look for in order to ensure the suitability of the property. By doing this, you can ensure that you are moving your pet into a safe, secure environment.

Some of the things to look for

If you own a dog (or multiple dogs) and you are on the lookout for a new property, there are some important points that you need to consider. This includes:

  • Space to run around indoors: If your dog spends most of his time indoors other than supervised exercise, you want somewhere that has plenty of open spaces and wide corridors for him to run around. We all know that dogs have their mad half hours, and when this happens he will need some space to run around in.
  • Is the garden safe and secure: Your dog will probably be spending some time in the garden and the last thing you want is for him to escape or get into any danger. You should therefore check on the safety and security of the garden area. This includes fences around pools (if applicable), secure fencing that your dog won’t be able to escape through, and any other potential hazards that could put your pet at risk outdoors.
  • Nearby facilities: Another thing to check on is whether there are parks or fields nearby where you will be able to take your dog on his daily walk. Having somewhere to walk your dog that is close to home will provide increased convenience for you. There may also be some good walking routes and trails nearby that you and your dog could enjoy, so make sure you check on these amenities.
  • Other pets living close by: One thing you might want to check is whether there are other families with dogs living nearby or even next door. This could be a good or bad thing depending on your dog’s nature. If he loves socializing with other dogs, this could be the ideal way to get to know the neighbors and provide your dog with a playmate. If he is pretty anti-social, it will enable you to determine the suitability of the property based on the proximity of nearby families with dogs.

So, when you are looking to purchase a new home, take these factors into consideration to ensure you can create a happy and safe home for you and your pooch.
