Nowadays, owning a dog isn’t about safeguarding your property. It is about having a new addition to your family, and pets are considered to be a part of your family. Even though there are many small dog breeds which are perfect companions, many large dog breeds can also be a great addition to the family and still, fulfill watchdog duties, if necessary.

Bernese mountain dog

The Bernese mountain dog comes from the Swiss Alps and has gained its popularity due their affectionate personality and intelligence. These dogs are extremely patient and loyal and will be great for a family that has small children. It has tri-colored fur, in white, brown and black colors. As it is a mountain dog, Bernese mountain dogs enjoy being outdoors and can cope with cold weather. It can reach a weight up to 110 pounds and height of 28 inches. But, because of the chances to develop cancer, these dogs live only for about eight years.

Collie

Collie gained popularity very rapidly after TV series Lassie came out, where the main character was a dog. The series portrayed that this breed is extremely sharp minded and friendly, which is very true. Collies will be very loyal and will always protect the owner and any other family member, therefore they will be a great family dog. They are never aggressive and rough, however, they are overly protective of humans. These dogs can reach a height of two feet and can weigh up to seventy pounds.

Mastiff

Among all large dog breeds, Mastiff is one of the largest one out there. They are extremely tall and thick and can reach up to 3 feet height and can weight even as much as 220 pounds. Due to their large size and how loyal they are, Mastiff makes great guard dogs. But, you shouldn’t judge them because of their size, since these dogs are very affectionate and patient. They can be introduced into families with other pets and children, but some socializing and discipline needs to be introduced, as they can hurt someone without realizing, by knocking you down whilst playing.

Great Dane

Out of all dog breeds, the Great Dane is the most impressive one. Great Dane holds the Guinness world record as the tallest dog on Earth proving how massive they are. Although their size isn’t anything modest, Great Danes are very gentle, friendly and calm. If you decide to go for a Great Dane, you have to note that they do require attention and plenty of space. Apartments in a city center won’t be the best place for these dogs, they need to have large backyards where these big giants can run around in. Due to their soft nature, Great Dane won’t make good guard dog, but it will be a great addition to our family.

German shorthaired pointer

German shorthaired pointer is a hunting dog, which requires a lot of attention and exercise. They are very intelligent and strong, therefore often used in hunting and as gun dogs. If the owners love to spend their time outdoors, this breed will be a perfect choice. They are a little bit smaller than already mentioned breeds, and are only about two feet tall and weigh only seventy pounds. So, if you want to be an owner of a dog from one of the large dog breeds, but are not ready to commit to Great Dane, German shorthaired pointer is a great alternative.

Rottweiler

Rottweiler reflects what a true guard dog means. Although we assume that this breed is very aggressive, in reality, they are very intelligent and good-natured. They are seen as aggressive because they are extremely loyal and protective. But they actually do make really great family pets and are great with children. Overall, this is a great option if you are looking for a well-behaved dog, as they are naturally extremely obedient and will serve as great guardians for your house and family.

Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular large dog breeds and have gained their popularity due to their looks and characteristics. Golden Retrievers have golden colored fur and they are very friendly. They are very good with children and will make great family pets. However, if you are looking for a guard dog, you might want to consider other options as Golden Retrievers are great towards owners and strangers.

German Shepherd

Out of all dog breeds German shepherds are the most rounded and versatile dogs. They are extremely intelligent, are like to serve, therefore they are the best breed to be used as service dogs. We can see German shepherds being used in army, police and alongside the disabled. Due to their obedience, they will make great guardians and family members. And they will be great around children, as these dogs are never aggressive towards children and know how to behave.
